Aphthous stomatitis (aphthous ulcers) is commonly known as a canker sore. It is a usual problem characterized by the recurrent development of small and shallow wound in the soft tissues inside the mouth. Though canker sores are not contagious, they can be irritating and painful thus making eating and talking strenuous. These types of sores heal even without treatment but the healing period depends on the severity of the canker sore.
The three main types of canker sores are Minor (most common), Major (less common), and Herpetiform canker sores (rare and usually form later in life).
The specific source of canker cores is still unknown. Mayoclinic pointed out that they occur when the lining of the mouth is being attacked by the immune system. Women suffer more often than men and these lesions are mostly experienced by people aging from 10 to 40 but there are certain conditions that raise the possibility of the formation. Listed in this article are the 6 top most common main causes of canker sores which make more to suffer.
- Emotional Stress and Fatigue
The combination of these two can be ideal trouble that triggers the occurrence of canker sores. Although some people didn’t claim that they are directly under stress the time canker sores occur but the lesions appear a few days after following a stressful situation. Handling stress, lowering anxiety, exercising regularly, and having enough sleep may stop the sores from coming and speed up the existing ones recover. Drinking enough water to stay hydrated also helps.
- Irritation from Foods (Fruits and Vegetables), Tobacco, and Chemicals
Fruits and vegetables are undoubtedly considered healthy foods but unfortunately, there are some that may cause canker sores. These foods are highly acidic in nature (lemon, citrus, pineapple, tomatoes, etc.) and may worsen the condition of the existing sores. Some of the fruits to avoid if someone has canker sores are figs, tomatoes, apples, and figs.

It is recommended to go for SLS-free toothpaste to avoid further outbreaks.
- Trauma or Injury to the Mouth and Dental appliances
Have you ever bitten your mouth while eating or talking? Most people will experience this in their lifetime. Brushing your teeth hard will also add to mouth trauma since the inside of the mouth is soft which make it fragile and prone to injury. Be careful as small cuts inside the mouth can cause canker sores.
Dental braces or simply braces are appliances used in orthodontics that adjust and corrects teeth while targeting to enhance dental issues. The use of this is irritating to the tissues inside the mouth and it often causes abrasions and cuts thus causing canker sores to form. Allergies to nickel used in the braces can cause the problem. Ask guidance to your dentist and always keep your mouth clean for faster healing and to avoid the spread of bacteria.
- Health Conditions
There are many health conditions that aggravate the increase of having canker sores. Celiac disease is a problem that occurs when a person eats food with gluten. People who suffer from celiac disease may develop canker sores as gluten sensitivity triggers the development of canker sores (recurrent canker sores).
HIV/AIDS and other immunosuppressed sufferers are prone to canker sores as their immune system has depleted.
- Hormonal Changes
Hormonal changes, especially during menopause, menstruation, and pregnancy have been connected to canker sores. This happens because, during menstruation and pregnancy, the progesterone level increases thus causing gum inflammation and other issues in the mouth.
